It is very unconviniently centered on this strange linguistic mishmash of West German, Old Norse and Medieval French, that is also known to many as English. Thanks a lot, that German and French are not yet forgotten. There are no Russian, neither Ancient Greek. Latin is given only coupled with English, as if sources really lack for such couples at least with German and French.

Update or different app

The Ultralingua functionality is still good. I had to "re-buy" dictionaries that I already had in release 7.1. I lost the Hotkey functionality.

This is a decent (portuguese) dictionary, but I could be a full language suite for this price. $40 is especially much when you consider the online resources that do the dame thing. One thing in particular that annoys me more than anything is that if you look up a word while the conjugate menu is up and then realize you need the definition, you have to start the search over again because they apparently to talk to each other...

I would say its a nice translation app but its not worth 40 dollars. I purchased Spanish-English dictionary, but if you are learning more than one foreign language (say, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian) and want another dictionary, you need to spend an extra of $19.99...

I find myself having to go quite often to other sources to find definitions to the words I’m looking for. I would describe it as adequate but noticably incomplete. The dictionary I’m using is German-English.

I have Ultralingua English/Italian on my Iphone and Pad. Theyre way better than this. They provide phonetic transcriptions for Italian words, this doesnt. Their entries are far more robust, more like a real dictionary, with usage and grammatical information. As an example, on this app, the entry for the Italian verb "fare" which has a gazillion meanings looks like this: fare v. 1. do v. 2. execute v. 3. have v. 4. make v. I needed something for my laptop, for writing offline and thought the $20 was an ok price. Now Im thinking it was a waste. On the good side, the interface is clean. Verb conjugations at hand are nice too. The imperative tense however is incorrect I believe. It looks like the subjunctive.

I’ve been using the Ultralingua app on my iPhone & iPad for a while and it generally works well, but I wanted a Portuguese-English dictionary to use on my desktop in parallel with other apps. First word I looked up was “ter,” the verb meaning “to have.” The dictionary shows the 1st meaning as “to absorb” with other translations listed alphabetically, including the most important translation “to have." The flashcard feature used only the first definition when it created the flashcard. This is not very helpful to the beginner looking to learn the basics. The iPhone/iPad app lists the most important meanings first, and the obscure ones are listed later. Bottom line is that I don’t know if I can trust this version to help me translate Portuguese words appropriately as I continue my studies.
